From the Music Director

Welcome to the Fort Collins Symphony’s 2021-2022 Season.

Music is an emotional endeavor that spans time, distance, and cultural boundaries. It allows us to hear what feelings sound like and inspires us to express what is difficult to verbalize. For millennia, composers and musicians have deftly reflected their circumstances through the medium of sound. Of course, we can appreciate music from any time period for its own sake. But when we dig deeper into the context that brought a composition to life, we more fully appreciate, engage, and resonate with the lived-experience of the artist and their unique emotional lens.

As we exit a year like no other, your FCS evaluated how the Great Pandemic has impacted our lives. The emotions of our personal and collective lives have ranged from sadness, anxiety, fury, confusion, and discouragement to relief, gratification, mirth, serenity, and hope. Our 2021-2022 Signature Concert Season—REFLECTIONS: The Emotions of Music—captures the spectrum of human sentiments we experienced during more than 18 months of unprecedented isolation and uncertainty.

Your FCS invites you to immerse yourself in the musical range of human emotions through a wealth of familiar and new works. This season’s repertoire includes such favorite classical composers as: Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Claude Debussy. We are also excited to highlight these groundbreaking and contemporary composers: Florence Price, George Walker, Chen Yi, Oskar Morawetz, Leonard Bernstein, Jessie Montgomery, Joan Tower, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson. And we are joined by guest artists Linda Wang (violin), Anthony Elliott (cello), Bryan Wallick (piano), and Oto Carrillo (horn) throughout the season.

NEW this season are three performance options:

  • In-person performances at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center,
  • Live-streaming concurrent on the night of each concert performance,
  • Webcast on Sunday afternoon the following weekend.

Please join us as we present the rich emotions of music. We can’t wait to see you!

As always, stay tuned!
