A 70-year anniversary — a rare occasion indeed — is celebrated with a gift of platinum. The Fort Collins Symphony (FCS) is honored to offer the gifts of rare and sparkling performances to the greater Fort Collins region throughout its Platinum 70th Season celebration. Sterling Silver opens the concert year at 7:30 PM on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Fort Collins’ Lincoln Center. Under the baton of Maestro Wes Kenney, this performance features music composed by Chris Pilsner, Sergei Prokofiev, and Hector Berlioz.
The FCS commissioned Fort Collins native and composer Chris Pilsner to write a new piece in honor of the Symphony’s 70th anniversary. According to Pilsner, his new composition, A Light in the Ocean, is a pure reflection of the wonders of life across the planet.
Sergei Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé Suite was written as the score for the 1934 Belgoskino studios film of the same title. As Prokofiev’s first attempt at film music and first commissioned work, it is the tale of fictitious officer in the Russian army. Follow Kijé as he is banished to Siberia, promoted, marries, and finally dies, all without ever having truly existed.
In a whirlwind of passion and despair, Hector Berlioz created one of the most iconic orchestral works of the Romantic era, Symphonie fantastique. It is a celebration of the dark and macabre, love and obsession, and the soul possessed. This masterpiece concludes with the thrilling audience favorite, Dream of the Witches’ Sabbath.
