Mary Evans

Mary Malizia Evans began studying piano at a very young age, not because she or her parents had any lofty goals of her being a prodigy, but because her older sister was taking lessons. As long as little sister had to tag along, she wanted to participate. Violin entered the picture around age eight, and after a brief detour on the clarinet, it eventually stuck.

Ms. Evans has a deep love of collaboration, especially making music in groups, large and small. During her undergraduate degree at University of Oregon, she served as concertmaster of the University Symphony Orchestra and associate concertmaster of Orchestra Next, the pit orchestra for the Eugene Ballet Company. In addition to her love of orchestral playing, she also enjoys chamber music of all kinds. She has played in string quartets, piano trios, and Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. She also performed on Baroque violin in the annual Musicking Conference and premiered multiple works for the Oregon Composers Forum.

Ms. Evans is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree at University of Colorado Boulder, studying with Harumi Rhodes. In 2018, she and percussionist Ryan Pride were finalists in CU’s Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Graduate Student Performance Competition, performing works for violin, marimba, and electronics. She performs with several regional groups including the Boulder Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony, Greely Philharmonic, and Cheyenne Symphony. She teaches violin lessons, both in her capacity as a teaching assistant at CU and in her own private studio.

Through each and every performance, rehearsal, lesson, and masterclass, Ms. Evans values connection above all else. It is her strong belief that music cannot exist in a vacuum. Connection must exist between teacher and student and from composer to performer to audience. That is what makes music, art and life worthwhile.
