Featuring Dr. Erin Macdonald:

Dr Erin Macdonald

Dr. Erin Macdonald, an astrophysicist, aerospace engineer, and science fiction consultant (yes, she really is a rocket scientist), hails from Fort Collins. Her academic research background is in gravitational waves and general relativity. She is an internationally recognized space science expert, writer, speaker, and consultant.

Macdonald received dual undergraduate degrees cum laude in Physics with Astrophysics and Mathematics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She received her Ph.D. in Astrophysics at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) where she was a member of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Scientific collaboration to detect gravitational waves from the Crab Pulsar. She also did post-doctoral work at Cardiff University, still with LIGO, where she was the first female researcher in her department.

After leaving the research field in 2014, Macdonald continued to teach at local community colleges, science museums, and popular science fiction conventions. Life took her to Los Angeles where she began speaking at official Star Trek events and working as a science consultant for the entertainment industry. In 2019 she was hired as the official science consultant for the ever-expanding STAR TREK franchise. Currently, she is working on all shows from concept development through post-production.

She discovered a skill and passion for writing as well as consulting and currently has multiple projects in development. In 2019 she wrote and narrated an Audible Original series produced by The Great Courses on “The Science of Sci-Fi” which reached the Audible Non-Fiction Top 10 bestseller list in March 2020. When not writing and consulting, Macdonald can be found streaming games on her partnered Twitch channel, teaching on YouTube, or relaxing in front of the television with a gin rickey or single malt whisky.
